Article by Rafael Langoni - Argentine Professor

My name is Rafael Langoni, a passionate English teacher with over 10 years of experience teaching this foreign language both in person and virtually. Since I was very young, I was interested in other languages and wanted to learn about different places and cultures. That is why I fully committed myself to becoming bilingual, and in 2008 I traveled to the USA where I lived for a few months.

I am currently married and have two wonderful young children. I love reading – I read everything – and writing; I also enjoy exercising outdoors, and occasionally I devote myself to gardening. And of course – like any good Argentine – I love football and I am a fan of the Boca Juniors club.

What particularly motivated me to write this article was the desire to show the world, or as many readers as possible, a piece of my "homeland". My country is commonly known by its capital, Buenos Aires; however, there are countless destinations and customs throughout this vast territory. Therefore, if you are a lover of rivers and beaches, forests and incredible cuisine, you should not miss visiting the province of Entre Ríos, located on the coast of Argentina. It is an ideal place to reconnect with nature and to rediscover yourself, your family, or your friends.

It is located in the north of the province of Buenos Aires, just about 3 or 4 hours from Ezeiza International Airport via National Highway No. 14. The province is traversed by two major rivers, the Paraná and the Uruguay, leaving in its wake countless islands and beaches, ideal for enjoying a calm and relaxed day surrounded by the local flora and fauna. Most of these are public, so they can be visited for as long as you like, and some even offer canteen services and portable restrooms. Navigating these rivers – especially the Uruguay – is a unique and moving experience that will allow us to take spectacular photographs and unwind with a fabulous sunset.

Furthermore, if you do not have your own boat, there are water transport services – the most well-known being the so-called "catamaran" – that offer trips and excursions for a few hours at relatively economical prices. There is also the possibility to rent equipment for water sports – mainly in summer – such as windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, or paragliding, among others.

Likewise, if you are interested in sport fishing, there are boats that provide everything you need, whether you are a beginner or an experienced angler. One of the best known and most recommended is "Dorado" fishing. This is, undoubtedly, one of the main tourist attractions of the region, due to the large number of rivers, lakes, and streams that bathe the coasts of the Littoral territory. It is worth mentioning that personal consumption of these animals is prohibited, and local authorities severely fine those who do not return them to the river. It is crucial to carefully return the fish to their place of origin, thus preserving the species and fostering a greater responsible awareness of environmental sustainability. What is allowed is to keep them on the boat for a few minutes to take a memorable photograph and keep the memory alive.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a moment of relaxation and a spa experience in a serene place equipped with all the services necessary for tourists, the province boasts thermal water complexes in almost all of its main cities. Such is the case of Concepción del Uruguay, Gualeguaychú, Colón, Villa Elisa, Chajarí, and Federación, with the latter being one of the most popular vacation destinations due to the naturally high temperatures of its waters, which are ideal not only for soothing the body but also for providing multiple health benefits. The only disadvantage of these places is that finding nearby accommodation can be somewhat challenging and impractical, given the large number of tourists each year. That said, all these vacation centers offer water parks, artificial lakes, pools, bars, and restaurants, providing countless activities for all ages and preferences.

In addition to the vast and incredible freshwater beaches, the province has abundant green spaces, villages, and estates, perfect for relaxing and being enchanted by the sounds of nature and the view of a countryside with indigenous beauty. With its diverse shades and textures, Espinillo, Ñandubay, Ceibo, Algarrobo, and Quebracho are some of the most common trees and shrubs that adorn the vast territory of Entre Ríos, making it undoubtedly a mecca for physical relaxation and mental tranquility. However, it is not only worth mentioning but also ranking first among the wild landscapes known for their exuberant vegetation and distinctive fauna: El Palmar National Park. Located about 379 km from the country’s capital, El Palmar spans more than 8,200 hectares that house the emblematic Yatay palm groves, along with various riverside environments and aquatic ecosystems of international importance. This area is not only a refuge for nature’s beauty but also for history, highlighting the occupations of the indigenous peoples and later the Jesuits. General admission is relatively inexpensive – it can cost around 12 USD per person depending on the time of year – and among the most common activities are bird watching, hiking, trekking, and both land and river excursions.

Unfortunately, if you are considering visiting this tourist attraction, you must take into account some negative aspects. For example, although the complex offers various outdoor activities, its range is not as extensive as that of other national parks in Argentina. It is also not free from the sudden appearance of exotic species such as snakes, vipers, lizards, or wild boars, which can pose a setback for uninformed visitors – although they are mostly controlled by park rangers. The weather can also be a disadvantage, particularly in summer, as temperatures can become extremely high and humidity very intense, making long hikes and sun exposure difficult. Moreover, for those who do not have their own transportation, getting to the site can also be an inconvenience, as it is quite far from the main cities and there are not many public buses available.

Finally, and not least, we will mention the most outstanding restaurants and artisanal eateries, which guarantee a unique gastronomic experience to savor and remember. As you explore the area and experience the culture of Entre Ríos, you will quickly come across food fairs, stands selling regional products, restaurants, breweries, and grills, all part of what is known as the famous "route of flavors and aromas". Each establishment offers its own or "homemade" cuisine, using the region’s raw materials and the typical recipes inherited from our immigrant grandparents – mostly Italian, German, and Russian.

Immersed in this journey through culinary subtleties, the local delicacies that travelers will find in the various towns are irresistible: criollo barbecue and "asado con cuero" – the latter being a traditional Argentine technique; fish-based dishes prepared with fresh fish along the coast of the Paraná and the Uruguay, such as boga, dorado, pacú, and surubí; the classic Entre Ríos alfajor; fried or baked pastries available at any local stall; products made with walnut and honey; yatay liqueur; sweets and pickles; as well as various salamis, cold cuts, sausages, and cheeses of all types and aging.

This ephemeral culinary art coexists with local handicrafts, forming part of the identity of the people of Entre Ríos. Thus, items such as mates and bombillas – a typical infusion made with yerba and hot water –, leather goods, woven utensils and decorations, polished or collectible stones, wooden objects, cutlery, and everything that comes from the creativity of local artisans become cherished memories. It is a choice full of flavor and meaning, where the past is manifested in the present through immigrant and indigenous roots, and the experience is offered to tourists as a synthesis of their stay in the area. But let us take a tour of the most outstanding places to enjoy a pleasant lunch or dinner.

First, one of the most typical and renowned places among Argentines worldwide is the "parrilla" (grill restaurant). These establishments offer grilled beef or pork. You can choose from different cuts or levels of doneness, whether you prefer your steak well done or medium. These places are not as economical compared to other dishes and eateries, although the portions are generous, and reservations are not necessary. Some establishments have also expanded their menus, offering additional options for vegans and/or vegetarians. It is worth mentioning that in this part of the country, the meats have a distinctive flavor due to their diet and pastures. If we move to another region – such as the south of the country – the texture and flavor of these foods will differ considerably, as is the case with the renowned "Patagonian lamb".

Second, and increasingly popular among both large cities and towns, are the "bodegones". These are casual restaurants set in period-style decor that serve fresh, regional, and well-prepared dishes. The signature dish, without a doubt, is the "empanada". As mentioned earlier regarding types of meats, you can find various flavors and varieties depending on the geographic region of the country. Essentially, their preparation is based on dough and filling – which can range from meat and chicken to more vegan options – and they can be baked or fried. Similarly, these charming and cozy spots offer a wide variety of local food and beverages, maintaining an excellent price-to-quality ratio.

Third, another of the most frequented places by Argentines and tourists, due to its price-quality ratio and pleasant atmosphere, is the pizzeria. Nowadays, these establishments can be easily found – on every central or peripheral block, one might say – thanks to the great legacy left by Italian immigrants in our customs and cuisine. Different types and sizes of pizzas, accompanied by good music and craft beers made in-house, are the trademark that these places have established. The only drawback is that, due to the high consumption of calories, saturated fats, and sodium – and alcohol – these venues can be one of the less healthy and more limiting options in some cases.

Fourth and finally, there are the ice cream parlors. One cannot visit Argentina – especially Entre Ríos – without delighting in one of these frozen desserts made from milk, cream, and sugar. And above all, one must not miss tasting the classic flavor that captivates both locals and foreigners: "dulce de leche". In recent times, ice cream parlors have not only perfected their production and presentation of ice cream but have also expanded their spaces and services, turning them into true recreation spots for the whole family. Furthermore, they no longer only serve this delicious treat; most have added a café and snack area. The only two drawbacks that can be found – especially in the high summer season – are the long waiting lines and the prices. Compared to other types of desserts, ice cream can be quite expensive, especially in renowned parlors that offer artisanal production.

In summary, this is a brief description of a portion of my "homeland". Entre Ríos is a perfect destination for those seeking a mix of relaxation, nature, and culture. It is a true hidden treasure in Argentina, where the diversity of landscapes, the warmth of its people, and its rich cultural heritage come together to offer an unforgettable experience. Whether you want to relax in its thermal baths, enjoy the abundant nature, or immerse yourself in its traditions, this province promises adventures and memories that will endure over time. Whether by navigating its waters, savoring local flavors, or participating in its festivities, every corner of "La Mesopotamia" has a story to tell. Come and discover for yourself why this gem of the Argentine coast deserves a place on your travel list.

Rafael Langoni
